  1. Mosaic via. SLIP 
  2.  
  3.     Mosaic will run over a SLIP or PPP connection.  The most difficult 
  4. aspect is establishing the SLIP/PPP connection.  Below is a brief description
  5. for establishing a SLIP connection using a Shareware product called
  6. Trumpet Software International Winsock version 1.0.  This particular product
  7. has an internal SLIP driver and an internal modem dialer.  If you would 
  8. like to obtain a copy of this product you can find it at the anonymous
  9. ftp site ftp.utas.edu.au.  The file, twsk10a.zip, is located in the 
  10. /pc/trumpet/winsock directory.  For the convenience of our users we
  11. also keep a copy of this Shareware product on our anonymous ftp server, 
  12. ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu. The file, winsock.zip, is in the /PC/Mosaic/sockets 
  13. directory.
  14.     After you have installed the Trumpet Winsock according to it's 
  15. instructions, envoke tcpman.exe and select "Setup".  Trumpet will
  16. need the following information about the SLIP server you are connecting to.
  17. Get this information from the company that is providing the SLIP service. 
  18.  
  19.         IP address      0.0.0.0   
  20.         Name server     0.0.0.0
  21.         Time sever      0.0.0.0
  22.         Domain Suffix   the.name.of.your.domain 
  23.            ie. "ncsa.uiuc.edu" is our domain.

  25. Check "Internal SLIP" and enter in the port number and baud rate of your 
  26. modem.  Save the information, click OK, and exit the program.  Now, your 
  27. system should be configured properly.  Next, envoke Trumpet again and use 
  28. the internal dialer option to place the call.  Select the "Dialler" pull 
  29. down menu.  You will probably take notice there a few options available, 
  30. however I will only discuss "Manual login" command.  If you are interested 
  31. in creating a script then please refer to the Trumpet documentation.  Once 
  32. you have selected Manual login you will need to enter the following command 
  33. in the Trumpet window.

  35.         atdt xxx-xxxx  (where the x's represent the phone number).
  36.  
  37. NOTE:  There are two ways to gain access to the Internet via SLIP:
  38.  
  39. 1) If you have a static slip account, that is, you were assigned an IP number 
  40. that doesn't change.
  41.     - login to the server.
  42.     - Enter the command "slip".
  43.     - Hit the escape key.
  44.     - Double click on the Mosaic icon.
  45.  
  46. 2) If you log into a server that assigns you a random IP number.
  47.     - login to the server.
  48.     - Enter the command "slip".
  49.     - Select the "Setup" pull down menu.
  50.     - Enter this IP in the appropriate field.
  51.     Note: After you enter the new IP number you will get a message that 
  52.     states you will have to close the application in order for this number 
  53.     to take affect.  
  54.     - Hit the escape key.
  55.     - Close Trumpet.
  56.     Note: This action will not cause you to loose your connection. 
  57.     - Double click on the Mosaic icon.
